Why Spokenword?

Being a teenager in America is not always an easy predicament.   At that time in our lives, our eyes and experiences are slowly opened to a world where the innocence and optimistic sense of fairness that we cherish from childhood seems to directly conflict with the harsh realities of the adult world we’re being introduced to.   The emotional discontent we experience at this stage in our lives upon encountering this incongruity between our childhood expectations and adult realizations often leads to rebellious behavior.  Sometimes this rebellion is as mild as refusing to do chores or staying out late.  Other times the resulting behavior can involve actions with significantly more dangerous consequences:  criminal/gang activity, bullying, drug/alcohol dependencies, dropping out of school, sexual promiscuity, and more.  While it’s easy to label such individuals as social misfits, many people who act in this manner are merely seeking to express themselves and be accepted by a community as we all are—they are just choosing dangerous vehicles by which to do this.

Spoken Word is a vehicle that helps troubled youth and adults accomplish the objectives of expressing themselves and being accepted for it, but in a much more productive setting.  It allows individuals the ability to both express and understand how they feel instead of merely acting out without a solid explanation of why.  Furthermore, by providing a receptive and supportive audience that intently listens to individual performers’ stories, these performers are provided with a community that wishes to understand and accept them for who they are—instead of merely dismissing their emotions and thoughts as naive “teenage plight.”  Spoken Word allows people to become comfortable with their emotions as well as the realities of the world they live in, overcome their issues, and eventually become productive members of their own communities (Go to our Testimonial page to hear how current and past members of Glassless Minds have used Spoken Word and the Glassless Minds community to overcome personal demons such as depression, drug/alcohol abuse, bullying, assault, etc) .
